What's a tune up?
The term tune up is rather interesting, as it has a long history in the automotive world. It started out as a term that generally referred to tuning the carburetor, a fuel delivery method on older vehicles. However these days the term has evolved to refer to general small maintenances that will keep the vehicle running great. Often times these services are performed in between major maintenances, such as 30/60/90K service. The following are some of the more common tune up services that many vehicles need from time to time.
Batteries will usually last from two to five years depending on their quality. Replacing a battery is necessary when your car becomes difficult to start due to the battery needing repeated jump starts. There may also be corrosion on the terminals causing starting trouble, in which case it will simply need to be cleaned off.
Spark plugs and wires
Spark plugs are what ignite the air and fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber in order to make the pistons pump. After many miles and years of service these will need to be replaced as they may become corroded, resulting in misfires that will cause a rough idle or more extensive engine problems.
Air filter replacement
A dirty air filter can cause the engine to run rich, meaning it will use more gasoline than is necessary. This is a great waste of fuel for such an easy problem. If you notice a reduction in fuel efficiency be sure to have a mechanic check out your air filter.
Fuel filter replacement
A clogged fuel filter can cause an engine to sputter and suffer from a lack of power. Make sure your engine's fuel filter is clean so you don't get stuck on the side of the road due to a fuel delivery issue.
Tire pressure check
Proper tire pressure is necessary for a safe ride, as well as one that gets good fuel efficiency. Under-inflated tires make the engine work harder to turn the soft tires.
