What car problems create strange noises?
There are numerous ways in which to determine if your car is suffering from some sort of ailment. You may notice a smell, or see something leaking. Your check engine light could come on or your car may simply not perform as it should. Another way to detect issues is with your ears. If you ever hear something that doesn't sound quite right it is a good idea to let a mechanic conduct further diagnostics. Here are some of the more common issues that may cause a strange sound to develop.
Worn brake pads
If you hit the brakes and notice a grinding, screeching or squealing noise there is a good chance that your vehicle's brake pads have worn low, possibly even to the metal. Low brake pads reduce your braking ability and should be replaced right away.
Low transmission fluid levels
A vehicle that is operated when transmission fluid is low could end up in need of a transmission overhaul. If you hear a grinding or whining noise while your car shifts it could indicate low transmission fluid levels.
An exhaust leak will often cause your car's engine noise to increase. This issue will be most audible during rapid acceleration, such as while getting up to highway speeds. While this may make your car sound louder and tougher, it is actually very bad for your car's performance and fuel economy.
Wearing engine bearings
A knock, knock, knock noise that rises and falls with engine RPMs is a strong indicator of worn out engine bearings, which is what the moving parts of the motor rest on. They can wear due to low oil levels or simply because of high mileage.
Failing power steering pump
Does your car screech when you make sharp corners? More than likely this is because the power steering pump is failing. It may fail due to a leak in the system or failed mechanicals. Get to a repair shop so that you don't end up with a car that is difficult to control.
