Top Reasons a Gas Gauge Reads Wrong
The gas gauge relies on three primary parts, the gauge itself, the sender and the circuit. The sending unit is generally a part of the fuel pump module, which includes parts such as the pump itself, fuel filter and the fuel float. The last makes contact with a variable resistor, which resistance will change based on the floater's level. Through the gas gauge circuit this information is sent, thanks in part to the battery, sending unit, the gauge and the ground wire, which is supposed to then allow the dashboard gas gauge to display the fuel level based on the level of voltage it receives, so long as it all works right.
Causes of Gas Gauge Failure
There are a few common causes of fuel gauge failure. If your vehicle's gas gauge is not working, it can likely be attributed to one of the following issues.
- Failed Sending Unit - The most common cause sending unit failure. Since the sending unit is always in contact with the variable resistor, it allows its contacts to wear over time, leading to an open circuit.
- Circuit Problem - A fault in the circuit utilized by the gas gauge can cause the gauge to read wrong. This may be due to corrosion, a loose connection, or a short circuit.
- Gauge Malfunction - The gauge itself can fail, but this is relatively uncommon. More likely it's failure will be apart of a larger instrument cluster issue, which will require further diagnosis to figure out what went wrong. It may be as easy as replacing a fuse, or it could require much more intricate electrical repairs.
A failed gas gauge could leave you stuck on the side of the road, so don't hesitate to have it fixed if it isn't reading right.
