Is it Time for Clutch Repair?
If you're a lover of fine European sports cars you may also fancy that third foot pedal. Driving a stick shift can be an exhilarating experience when behind the wheel of certain vehicles. That is, of course, assuming that all the parts, including the clutch, are in proper working order. A failing clutch will make it dang near, if not, impossible, to shift gears. This would prevent you from being able to even get the car moving in most circumstances. If you notice any of these problems in your European car don't hesitate to get to a professional auto repair shop for service.
If you're driving a long and the gear shifter suddenly pops into neutral and the engine revs high because your foot is on the accelerator it may be due to a worn clutch plate. This would require immediate attention as it is a dangerous problem that prevents your vehicle from being able to be properly controlled. This issue, though, can also be caused by an engine oil leak in which oil is leaking onto the clutch plate, thus causing excessive lubrication which may result in the slipping gears.
Soft clutch pedal
In many vehicles the clutch is a hydraulically operated mechanism, meaning it relies on fluid to return to its original position. If your clutch becomes soft or easily pushed to the floor, or if it rests closer to the floor and doesn't return to its normal position, there may be a leak in the hydraulic system. This would require replacing most of the hydraulic parts in most cases. On this flip side, this issue could just mean your car needs a clutch adjustment.
One of the most common signs of clutch trouble is the burning smell that you may remember from when you were first learning to drive a stick. This smell is reminiscent of burning paper and can indicate a worn clutch plate. You may experience this smell while driving in heavy traffic as well.
