How do I know if my car needs suspension repair?

The suspension system is generally talked about when discussing a vehicle's ride comfort. It may be interesting to know that the suspension does much more than just keep you comfy as you cruise along the highway. This system is also tasked with keeping you safe. How, you may ask? Well it handles a couple important tasks. First of all it is designed to keep all four wheels on the ground to ensure maximum contact with the ground in order to ensure sufficient braking power. Secondly it is designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling over while cornering. If you ever run into any of the following issues be sure to reach out to a professional technician who can provide your car with suspension service.

Drifting or pulling

There are a few things that can cause your car to pull or drift, both words that mean the vehicle doesn't want to drive straight when it is supposed to. If suspension fails in one corner of the vehicle it will cause the car to drift to that side as that particular tire won't be provided the same support as the others.

One corner of the car is low

Along the same lines as the above issue, you may notice that one corner of your car is low but the tire is fully inflated. This usually means the shocks or struts in that corner have failed and are due for a replacement. This is generally what leads to your vehicle drifting or pulling in the first place.

Oil on the struts

Struts use a specialized oil in order to absorb the unevenness of the road, such as potholes and bumps. Should the casing of the strut crack the oil will be able to leak out, which will lead to a very rough ride. If you suspect suspension trouble simply rub a rag over the struts to see if you can identify a leak.

Rolling sensation

If it ever feels like your car is going to roll over when going around a corner it is wise to get to a repair shop ASAP. This feeling could become reality if the suspension's anti-sway bar has failed.

Excessive bouncing

To test your car's suspension you can push on the hood or trunk in order to get it moving up and down. Once you stop pushing the car should return to its normal ride height within about 4 bounces. Any more than that and you're likely due for suspension repair.
