Does my car have an exhaust leak?
The exhaust system in your vehicle is one of the hardest worked systems in the car, and it doesn't even have any moving parts. The exhaust system is tasked with removing hazardous exhaust fumes from the engine, converting them to less harmful emissions and emitting them out of the rear of the vehicle. Exhaust leaks are bad for your car and not to mention dangerous for your own health. If you experience any of these signs of an exhaust leak be sure to get to a mechanic right away.
Exhaust leaks will allow fast moving air to escape from tiny cracks or holes in the exhaust system which can result in strange vibrations in multiple places.
- Steering wheel vibrations - You may experience slight vibrations in the steering wheel if your vehicle is suffering from an exhaust leak. The vibration is generally fairly light, but constant. Gas pedal vibrations - More commonly you'll notice a vibration in the gas pedal if there is a leak. It will be most prominent during acceleration.
Excessive engine noise
As the air escapes from the cracks or holes in the exhaust system it will cause your motor to sound extremely loud. Part of the exhaust system's duties is reducing engine noise. This increase in noise will be most noticeable during acceleration as power is being created.
Major decrease in fuel economy
An exhaust leak will result in a malfunctioning oxygen sensor, which takes readings of the exhaust to help calculate the proper air/fuel mixture needed to allow for the vehicle run right. Improper readings can result in a major drop in fuel economy.
What happens if I don't fix an exhaust leak
It is important to have exhaust leaks fixed as soon as they become apparent. If you don't you'll suffer from the following consequences.
- Lose money at the pump - You will end up spending much more at the pump than necessary. Health hazards - Exhaust smoke is deadly if inhaled and a leak could allow for it to seep into the passenger cabin, putting you at major risk of poisoning. Fail emissions testing - An exhaust leak will also cause your vehicle to fail any emissions testing that it must go through.
