4 Neat Facts about Land Rover You Didn't Know
Land Rovers are known for two things, going anywhere, and going anywhere in luxury. These vehicles weren't always luxurious though, as their history shows. What began as a pet project in the late 1940s has evolved into a massive feat of engineering genius. When you get behind the wheel of your modern Land Rover be sure to consider that car's ancestors and the people who built them! Here's four neat facts about Land Rover you probably didn't know!
Based on the Jeep
The first Land Rover concept was built on the frame of a US military Jeep following World War II by Rover engineer Maurice Wilks and his brother. They built the vehicle on their farm in Wales before bringing the idea to Rover, a British car company. The original Series 1 Land Rover was introduced in April 1948 by Rover. It wasn't until 1978 that Land Rover was founded as a company.
Centered steering wheel
Because the vehicle was being designed for utilitarian purposes Wilks decided to use a centered steering wheel, similar to most tractors and other agricultural equipment. This also meant that the design would not need to be retrofitted for left and right hand drive markets, thus simplifying the production process.
Tank track Rovers
After a Scotsman fitted four sets of tank tracks to his Land Rover to prevent it from getting stuck in the soggy grounds around his home Land Rover decided to offer the option starting in the late 1950s.
On display in the Louvre
A Range Rover holds the distinct honor of being one of very few vehicles ever displayed in the French museum because it was considered a masterpiece of industrial design. This was ironic, seeing as the vehicle's designer, Charles King, simply drew a box around the engine and other components, assuming the car was to be a simple utilitarian vehicle.
Today Land Rovers have evolved far from the utilitarian roots, but they are still highly capable vehicles. They are not without their maintenance needs and faults however.
