How do I know if my car needs engine repair?
From commuter friendly 3 cylinders to giant V12 engines reserved for European supercars, motors come in all different sizes. Regardless of cubic inches or liters there are still some things that will remain the same no matter what engine is in your car. For instance, without proper maintenance the engine is going to eventually require major repair and possibly a rebuild at some point down the road. Another similarity among engines is the symptoms they will display if it is time for some sort of major repair. If you notice any of the following problems be sure to get to an auto repair shop as soon as possible so proper diagnosis can be completed and a plan for repair can be created.
Excessive Exhaust Fumes
A telltale sign of major engine problems is if your vehicle is producing large amounts of colored exhaust. You can often tell what the trouble is based off the color of the exhaust smoke. Blue smoke indicates an oil leak that is allowing oil to be burnt up. White smoke means the engine is cooking antifreeze/coolant and black smoke means the car is using excessive amounts of gasoline, which can lead to any number of problems.
Loud Knocking Noises
A knocking noise that rises and falls with the vehicle's RPMs is a likely indicator that the engine bearings have begun to wear. These bearings are what the moving parts of the engine rest on and should they seize due to high mileage or improper lubrication the motor will abruptly stop and you'll be facing very extensive repair or, more likely, a complete engine replacement, if you want your vehicle to get back on the road.
Metal Flakes in the Oil
When you have the oil changed be sure to have the technician always inspect the old oil for metal flakes. If any are found it usually indicates unwanted metal on metal friction between the moving parts of the motor that are causing it to quickly disintegrate from the inside out.
Visible Engine Block Crack
If your vehicle is suffering from power decreases and rapidly dropping fuel efficiency you should pop the hood and see if you can identify any sort of visible trouble. While it is often not something you can't see without getting under the vehicle, a cracked block is a sure sign it's time for a new engine.
