4 Common Problems with 3 Series BMWs
The BMW E36 is the third generation of BMW's 3 Series vehicles, which includes coupes, sedans and convertibles. They were produced from 1991 through 1999 and include models 316, 318, 323, 325, 328 and the M3. These cars have proven to be very reliable and are well liked and respected in the BMW community. But like any car on the road, it does have its faults. Here is a list of 4 of the most common E36 problems and remember, if you experience any of these issues seek a qualified BMW mechanic to have your BMW repaired.
BMW Water Pump FailureThe water pumps on E36 use a plastic impeller that is used to propel the coolant throughout the engine that has been known to fail prematurely. If the water pump fails your car will not be able to push coolant around to cool the hot engine parts, resulting in overheating, which in turn can lead to bigger problems.
Rough Idle in E36There are two common causes of rough idle in BMW E36s. The first, and most common is a simple fix, a dirty idle control valve. Often times the part will just need to be cleaned and not replaced. The second issue can be caused by heavy rain flooding the DME compartment. This is more common in pre 1994 vehicles.
Burning Oil Smell in E36If you smell engine oil burning when driving down the road you will want to seek a professional BMW mechanic right away. The cam cover gasket is known to leak oil down the cylinder head and in the Double Over Head Cam engines have been known to spring oil leaks that drip into the spark plug wells. Leaking oil could result in catastrophic engine damage if the problem isn't quickly repaired.
BMW Radiator LeaksThe stock radiators in most E36 models have plastic parts that wear out and crack over time due to the cycling heat. The top radiator pipe and plastic thermostat housing are the usual suspects. A cracked radiator results in leaking coolant and can cause the engine to overheat.
BMW ownership is exciting and many people treasure their cars. If you experience any of the above issues your should seek the help a of a mechanic right away to ensure that your car will stay on the road for many more miles.
