Do I Need to Replace the Alternator?
Your vehicle uses gasoline, air and electricity in order to operate. The electrical power is generated by the alternator. Should this part wear out and begin to fail you'll quickly find yourself with a vehicle behaving in very strange ways, and eventually it won't start! If you experience any of these issues of alternator trouble get to a repair shop ASAP!
Dashboard indicator light
It's likely that your car has a warning indicator light on the dashboard that reads "ALT" or "GEN." This will often be the first indication that the alternator is no longer operating as it should. Don't ignore this little light, even if no other symptoms or presenting. Head to a reliable automotive technician for proper diagnostics.
Flickering or dim headlights
If the headlights are not as strong as they were or if they tend to flicker on and off it is a sign that the alternator is not be working right. The alternator creates the power that lights up the headlights, so any flickering often means the alternator is struggling to do its job.
If the alternator is going out other electrical systems may start to act strange. This means you may have trouble with power windows and locks, dash lights, AC, even the car radio. While there could be other things that cause these issues, it's worth taking it to an auto repair shop to have it checked out.
It is important to note that many things can cause odd noises in a car. An alternator failure can cause bearings to fail in the engine, creating unusual rattling sounds. The alternator might be the suspect in these sounds, especially if the noises are accompanied by one of the other symptoms mentioned.
Difficulty starting or stalling
Your car doesn't just run on gasoline; it also runs on electricity, and no, not just hybrids. The alternator provides electrical power to the spark plugs which ignite the gasoline in the engine. When the alternator starts to fail there likely won't be enough power sent to the spark plugs to keep the engine alive, which can cause the vehicle to stall for seemingly no reason while you're driving or idling.
If your battery goes dead and you're positive you didn't leave the lights on or a door open then be sure to have the alternator checked when replacing the battery so this issue does not happen again.
